Finally, the time has come for version 4, with a refined user interface, new features, and countless improvements. From the new AI chat assistant to the web interface, we have not let any aspect of the app untouched.
Build a modern workflow with generative AI models and store financial documents in audit-proof databases. Use new actions and trigger for automations and quickly revert to previous versions thanks to automatic versioning. And of course, there’s much more.
DEVONthink 4 is currently in public beta and should not be used in production environments. You can use it free of cost and with all features enabled. If you purchase the public beta, you will receive a full year of updates starting at the release of the final version.
What is DEVONthink?
Every day you have to deal with immense amounts of information: texts, PDFs, websites, images, emails, spreadsheets. You work with them at school, in the editorial office, in the law firm, in the medical practice, and in many other places. DEVONthink stores this information as documents in easy-to-backup databases where you structure, organize, and work with them. Even audit-proof, if needed.
Organize
Sort your documents in databases and groups, add tags to them, and turn them into curated collections with smart groups. Add cross-references to weave your own wiki or link to your documents from other apps, e.g., your calendar or your task list. With built-in reminders you always have the right document to hand at the right time.
Work
Take notes, e.g., as Markdown, plain text, or rich text documents. Add thoughts, observations, or references to your documents as annotations.
Edit documents in supported formats directly in DEVONthink or open them in other apps of your choice.
Make your scanned documents searchable, define your own metadata fields, and imprint your documents with freely configurable stamps or Bates numbers. Archive your email independently from your email app. Store multiple versions of your documents, track changes, and go back to earlier versions with just one click.
Secure & Private
With DEVONthink you data stays where it belongs: with you. It stores your databases locally on your Mac, not on our servers. When you synchronize it between your devices, the connection, the data you put on a cloud service, and, optionally also the database on your Mac, are securely encrypted. If needed, use audit-proof databases to make sure your archive cannot be modified unnoticed. And, of course, you can export your data at any time in a variety of ways.

Work Smart
DEVONthink assist you wherever it can. Its built-in AI sees connections between documents, suggests categories, and assists you in searching your databases. If it’s in DEVONthink, you will find it, no matter how carefully it is hidden.
Integrate also generative AI into your workflow, via an online platform or installed locally. Ask a chat model to analyze your documents, summarize texts, or add tags. Enhance your smart rules and automations with chat queries, and create your own AI agents. Image generation models create illustrations to match the text you’re currently working on.

Let DEVONthink do all the recurring work for you. Set up smart rules and run their actions on selected documents or triggered by conditions. Use actions directly from the AI chat and write your own AppleScript and JavaScript for Automation (JXA) scripts using the extensive scripting dictionary provided by DEVONthink.
